With snow and ice coming to the Raleigh area this upcoming weekend, we thought it would be appropriate to think about Winter Safety in Raleigh. Here’s a tip for both you and your tenants to be safe: Walking safely on ice and snow is hazardous and a major concern for many. So, learn how to walk like a penguin.
Walk Like a Penguin
Being safe while walking on ice is key. But how do you walk on ice? Luckily, recently I came across the following safety/prevention tip at work: “Slip, Trip, Fall Prevention…if you must walk on ice: Walk Like a Penguin”.
- Pay careful attention
- Point feet, bend slightly with knees loose and walk flat footed
- Extend arms away from side to maintain balance
- watch where you are going and use small steps
- Allow plenty of time to reach the destination
- Avoid boots/shoes with smooth soles or heels or fashionable high heel boots; Instead, use footwear with traction
- Be careful getting in/out of the vehicle; Use the vehicle for support
- Stay on designated walkways and look ahead when walking.
- If you lose balance, tuck into a ball and keep your head and face away from the fall
